Dilemma.... help me clear this...Barclaycard gave me shock

Hi,

I have been a credit card user since almost 5-6 yrs, but today I am questioning the basics as the Barclaycard customer service rep has put me in dilemma.

I am a Natwest credit card customer since all these years, but early this year I had to make one big purchase for which I decide to transfer the balance to good Balance Transfer card.

At that time, Barclaycard was offering a good deal of 18 months 0% interest, so I have transferred balance from Natwest to Barclaycard. It’s almost 5 months now I have it.

I have been paying small amount (that is more than minimum to pay) every month on Barclaycard and still there is quite a bit of amount pending on the card.

However today I was browsing the statement online and suddenly saw that there was interest charge applied in last 2 months statements. So I called up Barclaycard contact centre to enquire about it.

The customer service rep gave me a shock that whatever purchase I make on credit card are chargeable even though I pay before the bill due date. She said it was not charged earlier as it was 3 months interest free purchase offer on card.

E.g. my card balance from balance transfer is £1900 and I had purchases around £100 in last month. So for last month total balance is £2000 and minimum to pay this month is around £50.

I paid £150 in this month before bill due date, which covers £100 purchases however I was still charged £5 for the £100 purchase that I had made.

Till date I was under imagination that £100 would go towards purchase and £50 would go towards balance transfer.

Till date I have never paid any interest on my Natwest card if I pay in full before bill due date. But the Barclays customer service rep told me that the purchases are chargeable even though you have made the payment before bill due date.

And she was explaining that she had worked in credit card industry since 7 yrs and this is how it works.

Can someone clear my basics here?? Does it work like this or should I complain against Barclays by charging me interest amount wrongly??

Sorry for long post, but wanted to give full details.

Cheers,
VK

What does it say on the back of your statement regarding the way payments are made?
For example; it may allocate payments to BT first then purchases second etc.

although your payment is allocated to the purchases before the BT, nevertheless the normal interest free period only applies if you pay the total balance in full.

this is why the repeated advice on these boards is, unless you really understand about these things, then do NOT mix 0% BT with purchases.
