I need to change address on driving licence...according to the web page below i can do it using Govt Gateway ID.What is this?

https://www.gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence

and If do it via post, i hav to send original docs(eg passport) , what if they get lost?also, i have to get a car in the next 10 days or so, Can I still insure and drive while my licence is with the DVLA for necessary changes?

pleae could anyone help and make this process eaisier to understand !!!calling DVLA is just a big hassle.

Your help is much appreciated.

You will need to apply for a Govt Gateway ID. I have one so I could check my entitlement for my state pension regarding my N.I. contributions. It took about 10 days to come through the post.

  • You can register on line, even I managed it and I am as old as the hills and as daft as a brush.

  • I've been trying to change the address on my license all afternoon, these governbent websites are some of the worst designed mal-functioning pieces of crap i've ever encountered on the internet.

About 15 minutes ago I clicked on a 'next' button about half way through the form (page where you ener passport number, furthest I've managed to get in 2 hours of trying) since then I've managed to find this thread on google read it register to this site and post this reply and the page on the DVLA change address form is still loading.

At the end of the day I'll have to use the paper D1 form to change my address and I'll be without insurance for over a week most likely.

The way bids are made for govenment tenders (for building IT systems at least) needs to change. Instead of giving the work to the lowest bidder what they need to do is find a website that works well and does similar things to what they want and ask the people who made it to make one for them too.

The way things work now we're guarenteed to get substandard rubbish like this and worse like the NHS system that was abandonened half way through being unfit for purpose (how could it be worse than what we've got now?) and writing off 12 billion of public money.

Forget about parliamentary sleaze the scandal of private businesses using govenment contracts for free money needs to stop. Makes me sick!

p.s. that page with my passport details is still loading...

There is a lot more broken in the system than just choosing the lowest bidder. Often the department specifying the project doesn't even know what they want, and/or are constantly changing the spec during the development cycle, causing new stuff that was never planned for to get bodged in, failing that the spec might just be idiotic.

The lowest bidder stuff really doesn't help as then you end up with a supplier that just wants to meet the spec and nothing more. For example one of my co-workers ended up working on a project for a public facing web service for a large government department that only specified it must work in Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, so that is all the site was tested in, no Firefox or Chrome, no IE9 or 10.

The project just about scraped in on time and within the budget, there really wouldn't have been any time to make it work in other browsers and still make any profit on the deal. Good luck ever getting it to work on a Mac or Windows 8.
