Hi
I had a paver pave the front with block paving-done correctly. Now he has started doing the back garden and simply put mortar around the edges of the slab before pressing the slabs on. Also, he hasn't used any sub base or sand undernealth the slab so it is hollow. He is 20% in the job, can anyone please advise? I'm not sure if the sub base or sand is optional? Many thanks.
He is installing these:

Can I also addd that the height of the mortar is approx 10cm not the usual 2/3cm I see in online videos.

Hi, The website you linked to has a laying guide which says an area which will have light traffic area ie pedestrian, can be laid directly onto solid ground and points out that every site is different and it is best to err on the side of caution so a base of hardcore could be installed first if you think the ground is not hard enough !. It says a bed of approx 50mm can be used and from our experience a full bed of mortar, usually a cement /washed sand mix should be used. Hope this helps0

Hi LLanddyrnog, many thanks for your time and effort in replying to my concern. I am much reassured that you can actually lay these slabs directly on the ground. Thanks.........Yes it is only a light traffic area.0
