and anyone else with a fish interest.
I have Kelly and Becky the 10 year old goldfish that I snaffled from the hairdressers long ago. They've been swimming around their 220 litre tank with their gravel and their super duper big filter system and 4 varieties of fish food for variety etc and seem happy enough.
But the question is, would they be happier in an outside pool? A friends OH has a pool with goldfish in it in their garden. I wanted to let the pond settle and make sure he was looking after them first, but he's still keen after 6 months. And if I do move them, is it OK now that the weather is getting colder and what would be the best way to do so.

Sorry bugslet only just spotted this post.
What kind of goldfish are they? If they are the common type, with more slender bodies and a single or twin tail then they will be fine in a pond and much happier.
But moving them now is an absolute no no.The shock of the difference in temperature even if you were to cool their water down slowly, would be too great and would almost certainly kill them. They will be absolutely fine in their tank until the spring. It is big enough and well filtered and it is so nice to hear of someone who cares enough to give them the proper attention they need, especially considering you rescued them. And by spring i mean probably not until a mild spell in April onwards.
If you come back with a description or photo of them i can confirm if they will be ok.It is only the fancy varietys and sometimes the more rounder bodied shubunkins that don't fare well in a pond.Just make sure it is deep enough and not overcrowded, with good filtration.
If you still want to carry on keeping fish, why not look at tropicals. You could do an awful lot with a tank that size.0 -
That's OK froglet, I don't expect you to lurk round on the off chance I ask a question!
They are a bog standard goldfish, nothing fancy about them ( bit like their owner!). I thought it might be too cold by now to move them. I'm guessing they are happy enough in their deluxe tank for a while longer;), so they can loiter there till it gets warmer.
As I say I'm a fish keeper by default, so if they go to a new home then I'll either give the tank away if anyone I know needs one or sell it ( having cleaned it first!).
Thanks for coming back to me.:beer:0 -
you are welcome. It is nice to be asked advice! My poor old fish are huddling together at the bottom of their 4ft deep pond now that i had built in the spring so they are in a sort of semi hibernation!
Me,I've just had a rather painful op on my foot to sort out long term arthritis and have had a very uncomfortable week with it swathed in bandages and with my leg up as much as poss.So i am what you might call very bored.Wouldn't know what to do without my lap top as my computer is upstairs and i can't even attempt them for a fortnight!0 -
I think they will be huddling for a while! It's flipping cold in the north west.
I'm bored to and I'm at work. Mind you, good excuse to do your Xmas shopping online instead of braving the shops ( not that i do that anyone, being a right bah humbug).
Hope your foot recovers quickly and that you have someone to wait on you hand and erm, foot;)0 -
Thanks.I knew the op was coming up so i did all my xmas shopping beforehand, mostly online and stuffed the cupboards and freezer.I won't be able to drive again till mid jan but i can at least go to work and scoot around the office on a computer chair! I only work part time anyway.
Yes hubby is on hand. His cooking is improving by the day.0
