is my laptop and psp insured against accidental damage?

Hi there,

I would be grateful if anyone who is very familiar with the terminology of the legal and general building and contents insurance might help me with this.

I've taken out insurance online with them and want to make sure that my laptop valued at £600 and a Sony playstaion portable hand held games console value £150 is covered against accidental damage within the home.

I have chosen contents unspecified items to the value of £2000 when filling in the form, so wonder if instead I should have put them under specified items, which I didn't insure against.

It says under the standard policy that accidental damage to computers is covered, but then it goes on to say that "accidental damage to portable items such as video camera's and hand held computer games" isn't covered and should be included under the specified section of contents part of the policy... I have only taken out under the unspecified section of contents) I take it unspecified is mainly for items away from the home)

I'm sort of realizing now that maybe I should have included the psp and digital camera under the specified section of contents for cover against accidental damage within the home.

Can anyone give me some help on this?

Thanks

Did you take out standard contents cover or did you include the accidental damage extension?

Most contents policies include accidental damage to audio and visual equipment as standard (t.v's etc) but some do exclude items that are designed to be portable. However, if you have included the accidental damage extension, this exclusion isn't usually there therefore, if you drop your laptop or PSP then it SHOULD be covered, however you would need to check with L&G.

The specified and unspecified items are usually an extension to include cover OUTside of the home

AFAIK there's £1500 "unspecified" cover on my home insurance that covers items BOTH inside and outside of the home for accidental damage and theft.

Was assured that this applied to my laptop when renewing insurance.

I would call them and introduce them as specified items, my experience of L&G policy is that they may well try to wriggle out of a claim within the home for such an item although you may have more success outside the home, but to be on the safe side I would say you should specify them, I would expect your premium to rise by only a few pounds as a result of this addition. Remember you only have the policy in force to protect you and the burdon is on you the insured to ensure you are adequately covered, ask the questions and pay the extra premium if need be, in the long run you will be sorry if you don't and you have need to claim.

    Hi again,

Many thanks for replies. What I also find confussing is that on the key feature pdf of the policy it says that small items such as video camera, hand held games console should be specified, yet on the specified section of the online application form in the help section for specified it says that specified items must have an individual value of over £1500.

here is the key feauture document of the policy pdf

Looking at that and comparing with your op I get the impression you have personal protection extension to your policy and this would allow ad or theft cover away from the home if that was your question. To put your mind at rest make the phone call and ask the questions, is my psp covered away from the home? is my camera covered away from the home? if you get affirmative answers simply take note of the time and the csa name and log it in your policy handbook, all calls are recorded and retrievable, so in the event you have trouble with a future claim refer to your notes, if you are advised that cover is in place this cannot be withdrawn at a later date and the conversation will be referred to and the claim allowed.
