Can I just be proud here and have a little boast?
My pup went for his first walk this morning. He has settled in well, and explored at home where he has also met lots of people but now he is 'properly' immune his second vaccs were beginning of last week and so with the dry weather big dog and he and I went in the car to the nearest dog walking spot and he saw some of the big wide world.
Big dog was excellent, forgoing the opportunity to play with some fun dogs to stay near the puppy (obviously on a lead!) and me, and on the short run back to the car we met two separate wlakers each with an older dog who was happy to meet and greet quietly with big dog and the puppy, who behaved EXCELLeNTLY. Socialisation is so important and I was so lucky to meet dogs ideal for a meet and greet, and to have another dog who is well socialised to shops puppy how we behave. He also saw her not talk to a dog on a lead and ignore a dog who looked scared of her.
A most successful first walk, I am delighted!

Absolutely not. Hands full of puppy lead and huge gloves ....plus keeping an eye on big dog. No time for snapping pics!
If I did imagine the uproar had my post read,...
Something terrible happened on my puppy's first walk today.....I was just taking a photo for getting ready and the rest of you and a dog aggressive dog suddenly appeared...I mean, he might have been there a while but I was fumbling with the zoom and the puppy was treating me like a maypole...
N'ah.....
But you can have another picture of him if you like.

Fantastic, what a caring older dog you have to keep an eye out for the toddler, and well done on socialising as soon as possible.
Agree he looks like a big teddy bear.
I loved it when my pooches would go to the field and meet their mates, to the extent we used to have a little Jack Russell female that would literally knock on our door to see if they were coming out to play.
Socialising and mixing is such a big part in their behaviour.
I'm sure you know, but to others introducing a new dog - stay and chat with the owners of other dogs in a smiley, friendly manner, ignore the dogs; but if they see you relaxed with the owners, they will also relax and play with each other.0 -

Big dog recognises the kiwi fruit as family, but is not thrilled with us. Dog dog is VERY caring, she could not come with us as she has her leg in a cast, but IMO it works out better.
A dog who is too caring and protective might feel the need to be a little on guard when really I want to show him that it's all relaxed and fun. Big dog got the measure perfect. She stayed just in front of us, did not leave us, but did not deign to play with him. She shared the meet and greet with him and looked out for him, but nopt in a 'bossy' way, or a mothering or jealous way.....just....'hmm....suppose I better keep an eye on him or dog dog won't be pleased'.
I agree whole heartedly about the importance of relaxing and chatting....it's imperative!0 -
What a gorgeous pup LIR! I agree, looks like a teddy bear but more a 'merrythought' bear than a Stieff!
Congrats on succesfull first walk!0 -
