My job is based on a salary plus commission (ratio around 60/40)
When applying for my mortgage some time ago, they took my salary as basic plus commission as i had a letter from head office to state my commission, although variable, is guaranteed.

So my question is, when it comes to applying for credit cards can i take my 'salary' as the figure on my P60 from last year?

  • Speak to the lender in question, most will want "guaranteed" salary but then few of us have a truly guaranteed amount.

...... If you make contributions to any Pensions via work then the P60 value is likely to be lower than your true salary anyway (purely your taxable salary)

Does it matter, as far as I am aware they don't check, as long as you could argue that you used a reasonable basis, after the fact. Am I correct here?

    I'm sure they wouldn't.
But if they did i just was curious to know legally what they require.

What I am saying is, providing you can justify the figure put down and it is not just plucked out the air then it is not fraud.

Yes, I hate those gross income fields on applications. For many of us it is nowhere near that simple. I tend to side with StevieJ's approach, just be realistic with the amount of income you specify. I take mine and knock off 20%
