Hi All,

Me and my girlfriend are buying our first house together. Can anyone recommend any good shops for Furniture.

We taken a look as most big furniture stores like DFS, Harveys so on are there any good online furniture sites that are relative cheap ?

Depends on what you are looking for. Ikea maybe, I used Chocolate Frog for some Oak furniture that was delivered Wednesday and it is great quality Oak and a good price. Nabru or Sofasofa for settee's/bed settee's.

I remember nearly crapping myself when I saw the prices of stuff in the likes of DFS for the first time. I mean, a couple of grand for a sofa? No chance.

We have since bought the majority of ours from gumtree and the like. The downside is that it takes time.

Have you got the money to start out with everything new? Not many people do - most of us started out with a selection of hand-me-downs and second-hand stuff. As long as you have the basics to use, you can then replace them with new as finances allow.

If you're in that position, ask around family and friends - if someone is getting new furniture, ask if they would pass their old stuff on to you. Freegle/Freecycle is another good place to look.

buy really really cheap second hand stuff to start with,

nothing worse than buying a big nice expensive sofa for a new house, living with it for 3 months and then realising that you want to orientate the room differently becuase of X/Y/Z (things that you only realise when you live there) but the new sofa wont work in the new position.

My sister bought some furniture from the British Heart Foundation charity shop as mentioned above. Prices are excellent and there are some new pieces there too.

We got an iron bed frame and matress for £50 from ebay and 2 red leather Winchester style sofas from gumtree for £200.

They all look the business.

You don't say what area you're in but around Merseyside we have 'Bulky Bobs' it's a community thing that collects unwanted furniture then refurbishes it and sells it on with a guarantee.
Try to find something similar by you.

seconding british heart foundation, ymca also sometimes have furniture stores which are great.
