Smells coming from next door

Hi all. Last week ago my family and I moved to a semi-detached Victorian 4 bed house. We have original wooden floorboards all through the downstairs floor. We have noticed very strong smells coming from next door into our dining room. They're having some work done at the moment so during the day we can smell varnish, not just faintly but very strongly. What worries me more though, is that in the afternoon strong cooking smells seep into our dining room and the smells linger for hours. This is actually quite unpleasant. Our floorboards have gaps between them so we will crack on with filling the gaps. Is there anything else that we need to do? Do we need to discuss this with the neighbours at all?

You could discuss it with them, but what are they likely to do? They can't stop cooking or doing home improvement. It's not like they are growing cannabis or hiding dead bodies a la Fred West!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

I guess what I'd like to know is if other people have experienced this and if sealing the floorboards has helped.0
