Clutch problem whilst in garage
I took one of my vans in for a service and it needed a couple of basic things, brake caliper, bearings etc. Anyway, last night my dad said he thought he saw the vehicle being put on a low loader, I said 'thats impossible as the garage called me in the last hour saying it was all fixed and I could pick it up in the morning'. I called them and they said they had just took it round the block to check the brakes and the clutch had gone. I just thought that its one of those things and get it done, but I was talking to someone today and they said that if it went whilst the garage were out in it, it should be down to them to repair it FOC. Im not sure I agree with this, but thought Id put it out there to see peoples opinions.
Just as an addendum, I know the garage arent trying it on, we live in a small community and I know them well as they do all my vehicles.

Was the clutch slipping or any other signs it was on the way out before it went in?0

I'd like to know how the clutch had just gone - what is the problem?0

How olds the van? Is it likely its worn out?0

that ones a 57 plate, done I think 80k miles. I dont really know if there was problem before, it wasnt anything blatant, but maybe it did 'clunk' occasionally.
I dont know what happened, but its a 7m vehicle and was recovered on one of their flatbeds. Cost is about 450 quid apparently. Iveco.0 -
Clutches can just 'go'
Been there, done that. Mine went one day, on the way to a garage.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

any opinions?0 -
we've got a daily, clutch on that went from first notice slip to needing recovery between the dartford bridge and south mims so they can go quite quickly, mileage was 100-110k
Yours sounds like a mechanical rather than friction failure which would likely be instant and could happen anytime, just one of those things is my view0 -
I think it was just an unlucky coincidence for the garage that it went whilst it was booked in for unrelated repairs.
I wouldn't expect them to pay for it, but I would try to negotiate, maybe trade prices for new parts and discounted labour. (They will be feeling a bit embarrassed too).
If you get "funny" about it and insist they pay, rest assured they will get their money back gradually on future services repairs.
Best to acknowledge that $h1t does happen, see if they will sort it at favourable rates. You will then get the reputation as a decent customer and it will probably reap rewards in the long run.0 -

I fully agree sally. It just made me think when this person mentioned it earlier what other people thought. one of those things as you say.0 -
Could also work out beneficial for both the garage and for your business (I guess you run a business as you say all your vehicles are done there).
You say "Sod's Law, blummin' clutch went when it was at XYZ garage, totally unrelated, but bless 'em - they sorted it out at trade price and cheap labour rates"
They say " Capeverde from ABC Company brought one of his vans in, sod's law the blummin' clutch went when we had it, he was really good about it and realised it could have gone any time - what a top bloke, never whinged, we sorted it out cheap for him - I'd definitely trust him to do my building/landscaping/floor fitting as he's honest and has a good attitude".0
