iPhone drama .. urgently need advice

I recently bought a white iphone 4 off my sister in law, and it had a smashed screen (but worked 100% fine)
I took it into my local phone shop and asked them to replace the screen. They charged me £40 which I paid.
Ever since, the phone proximity sensor has been broken. So whenever I hold the phone to my ear, it doesn't close off the screen, causing my face to press all the buttons which frustrates me and whoever I'm talking to.
My mum took the phone back today and they said there was nothing they could do, they've put a question on a forum and will get back to me if they hear anything. They also told me there's no point going anywhere else.
However, a quick google from me and in less than 10 seconds I can see that this is a direct problem from replacing phone screens, therefore they haven't done their job properly as they have broken my phone in the process.
Do I go in there and demand my money back? Technically they have fixed the screen, but I can't use my phone properly now. I know I'm going to have to pay out more somewhere else to fix the sensor so ideally I want this £40 back.
Any advice please? And also any advice on how to fix the phone too would be great haha.

Give them the phone back and tell them to fix it properly. If they can't then they need to give you a refund.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
It is reasonable to give them the opportunity to rectify the situation - assuming the fault was caused by them. If this phone is known for such problems arising as a result of changing the screen then they could argue they have not damaged the phone - the phone is inherently faulty and therefore out of their control. So always worth approaching them in a polite and courteous manner, then they may respond in an equally friendly way0

Are you sure the problem is not because previously the screen was smashed so the screen wasn't as sensitive before. Now it's fixed the existing problem is apparent.
I would be surprised if you can prove the damage was done by them! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Drama? Urgent?
You're right. A broken proximity sensor really justifies all of the emotion you put into your post.0 -
Thread title - don't you know a partially working phone automatically makes a thread dramatically urgent? (or is that urgently dramatic?).
OP - have you talked to the company again?
Edit: aww...he deleted his post!Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Are you 100% sure its the phone shop's fault?
If your drop your phone and smash the screen, it wouldn't be surprising if it also damaged a sensor behind the screen.0 -
Brilliant, that's another Newbie got rid of

Thanks for some lovely(!) comments. It was urgent simply because I needed answers that day as I was going back to the shop and needed to know what I was going to say. I was also moving out of London the next day so wanted it sorted. It was a drama because I had no phone, and was moving house. To me, it was a very stressful time and thank you to those for the genuine comments. They fixed the phone for me and apologised for the delay.0
