Vets4Pets not so transparent prices

  • I think a couple of people are missing the point. I'd pay £10,000 for my dog's health, but the principle is that they are levying charges without prior notice. This is wrong.

Oh, and they wanted me to bring in a perfectly healthy animal - any animal - so that I could be told that it's not licenced for ferrets, and sign the waiver. Umm...I KNOW it's not licenced for ferrets....only one drug IS licenced for ferrets, and that's ferret-specific. I can sign the waiver at reception, I should NOT have to pay £22.50 for the privilege of you seeing a healthy animal so I can sign a flipping waiver!!

I was v annoyed about that.....

Vets are required by law to see the animal they are prescribing medication for, so I expect this is why they asked to see one of the ferrets.

Having just compared vets4pets with three other local vets I can say that my local branch not only has around a 10-20% mark up on other vets prices for equivalent treatments but also adds in additional and possibly unnecessary costs ('we recommend your cat receives fluids during the operation as this may help them recover more quickly and with fewer after effects' at an additional cost of £30). Having used them for my four cats for 10 years I feel in a difficult position as two of my cats need operations (not covered by insurance) at a total cost of nearly £800. Do I go with the vets i know or go elsewhere and save nearly £250?

I've never had to pay for follow up visits, over the years I've used three main vet practises and five others for short notice appointments or work on my foster dogs (rescue uses certain vets)

If i book an appointment and the vet asks for a follow up in a few days/week/fortnight I've always just had a quick check done, picked up and paid for any meds needed but not been charged anything for the consult.

I know my vets do have an advertised charge for a return visit but they don't seem to charge it for an immediate follow up to the initial visit and don't charge it for a check up after an op. I've only had to pay it for ongoing treatment and it tends to be charged once every four or five visit or if the consult was particularly long.

I don't have a problem paying for a second consult if my vets charged one every time but I would be annoyed if I wasn't told about the charge and was led to believe it was free and then asked to pay when it's too late.
