Insurance Mistake

hi guys
I really really need some quick help here :(

I took out an insurance policy in July, gave them all the correct direct debit details, paid my deposit and went on my way!

I noticed in September that payment hadn't left my account, (I work abroad a lot so checking my bank statements isn't something I do often) so I called the company.

I informed them of the issue, they read out the bank account number and the last digit was wrong, I know I gave the right one as my agreement stated it, so clearly it was their fault and they admitted it.

They said they changed the account number, all sorted and I asked "but what do I do about the past two months" to which the lady said "if the other person claims it back, we will pay them, but this is our mistake you wont have to pay".

Again, I've been out the country for 6 weeks and haven't checked my bank.

I just received an email from them to say it's still incorrect, and I must change it!! So, I emailed to explain what I did previously and they said sorry, it's their mistake they will look into it. However, they now want me to pay the last 4 months by 4th Dec otherwise my policy gets cancelled, now I don't have that kind of money just sat around, and I don't know what to do!!

I called them and explained the error to which they did nothing about 2 months ago. Do I have a leg to stand on here?

I'm now home for Christmas, cant leave my car uninsured but cant pay that kind of money upfront, what do I do??

Please can someone help me :(

Sorry, but it doesn't matter they failed to take the money - you've paid nothing for cover so should have had the funds available.

You could ask to restart cover as of now, which would restart the clock, but if they refuse there's little you can do.

You really really dont want them to cancel on you, you really dont.

Any insurance company in the future will ask you 'have you ever had and insurance company cancel your policy' and you will be up the creek without a paddle for years.

Borrow it, steal it, but pay it as soon as you can. Can you payu by credit card.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Presumably you do have that money sitting around because they havent taken it and you keep on saying your not in the UK so dont need to check your accounts so presumably dont use them?

If they told you wont have to pay the first two you can raise a complaint about that but the second two you evidently do need to pay as you havent yet.
