HDMI cables

I am looking for a 5 metre HDMI cable - however the cost is putting me off.....
I can get a 1metre length from PC World for between £5 and £45 - what is the difference and will I notice any ?
a 5metre cable costs a ridiculous £60
Any suggestions ?

that will do and no you wont notice any difference so long as your not constantly plugging it in and out - this is due to the slightly lower build quality of the cable meaning the cable/connector might break if constantly being connected and disconnected, signal wise you honestly will not see a difference because its a digital cable, so either the 1s and 0s will reach the display or they wont, there is no signal degradation like on the old analogue cables

HDMI cables are a digital connection and they will either work or they won't. If they don't work you will either get a black screen or in rare cases you will get obvious sparklies.

They are not at all like analogue cables where the overpriced ones did offer an improvement in quality that may or may not be worth paying for.

This doesn't mean that all the expensive ones are a complete con. HDMI cables carry a lot of data and there are plenty of cases of devices with a weak HDMI transmitter *cough*PS3*cough* combined with a cheap long cable and a lower quality display ended up with a blank or sparkly display that was fixed just by upgrading the cable.

I'd go for the cheap one, send it back if it doesn't work, then try an expensive one.

OK - does Gold Plating really make that much difference
I know that gold doesn't oxidise but is it necessary for these connectors ?
Is it just an excuse to rip us off even more ?
And the voltage (John1 quoted 1.4v) - surely they work on a "standard digital 5v" ??
Also what has Ethernet capability got to do with HDMI - Different format signals - surely ?- I am confused !!

dont look into it that much,

the 1.4v is the version of the standards it will be compatable with, and the ethernet capability of the cable is just part of one of the standards which allows compatable devices to use the cable for data transfer above and beyond the 'basic' audio and video channels therefore allowing for internet sharing from one device to another without the need for a further cable

Surely if you get sparkles it's not a case of working or not? If there's interference, then surely it's part-working, just not working the way it should?

Sparkles is an edge case that is very difficult to achieve. It happens not because of interference but because your signal is so bad that you are just at the point before it would fail completely. The sparkles you see are the individual pixels that were unreadable. It is not the same as static on an analogue signal.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20056502-1/why-all-hdmi-cables-are-the-same/ explains it better than I could.

The only part of that article I would disagree with is the statement that it's only an issue on 50 foot + cables. I've seen it happen with 1.5m cables when used with a bad combination of monitor and source. Hell I had it on my own computer (DVI, which is basically HDMI without audio) but with only one of the two ports on my graphics card.
