Question about DD paying in full

Hello all, I wondered if anyone knows how direct debit in full payments work - if I make a payment prior to the direct debit coming off (clearing the balance) would the system be smart enough to know this and stop the direct debit? What if the payment just reduces the balance?

In case you're wondering why I've asked, I absent mindedly paid the card off this month, forgetting that I'd set up a direct debit for full payment. Just need to know how much money (if any) I'll have to have sitting in the account to cover the payment.

Comments

  • That depends in the Credit Card.

Some cards will take a DD regardless of any additional payments, others will adjust (or cancel) the DD if there is sufficient time (at least 5 working days before the payment is due).

With those cards who take the payment regardless, you will have to advise them if the payment is not to be taken. The payment can be pulled manually out of the system, again that will have to be done several days before the payment is due.

Get the facts from the horse's mouth and contact your card!

My experience (and I mix full payment by DD and extra payments a lot) is that they will take the full payment regardless of what you pay after the statement is produced. If you can afford it, it's better to wait until after the DD has been paid and then call your CC and ask them to refund the difference

If you paid after the statement date then they'll likely take the full amount they said (the bit where it says "Amount of £x.xx will be collected by Direct Debit on or after y/yy/yy"). Ring them up and ask them to manually change the DD if its at least 7 days in the future.

No - DD's and their amounts usually have a 5 day window so if you clear the balance the old amount will still be taken - the system does not work in real-time.
  • And not only that, the CC account will now be in credit and will be frozen and not usuable as well. You need to cancel the DD with your bank immediately. That way the instrument will not be there for the CC company to use. Do that first and then speak to CC company about it all.
  • Phone the CC people and ask them, if they will still take it then ask them to adjust the amount. I've done this before.

Some CC providers will issue a £12 "Failed collection" fee if you do that, regardless of whether or not the account is in credit, so I wouldn't do that. Just contact the CC.

Or if your going to spend the amount next month anyway, just forget about it.

Neither of the above statements are true.

If you get a refund on your CC it will put your account into credit, but it won't be frozen. They may take action if you put it in credit on a regular basis.

Do not cancel the DD, it's not necessary. All you need to do is call the CC company and ask them not to take the DD for this month if you have already paid in full.

As has been said, it depends on the CC whether they adjust the DD or still take it so it is best to call and check.
  • Thanks all, much appreciated.
