ebay ...convertible car...advice needed!

I have a convertible rover 1996 approx with brand new roof that cost me £1000 . the car has a few things to do on it such as new bonnet, new battery and a couple of lights in order to get the mot. i think because of this it would only go for about £200 plus on ebay. but if i sold off parts such as roof separately ( i notice there is someone on there selling theres for 400 pounds though did not see a bid at the time). i woudl like to get a bit more money for the car but dont have the space to sell the parts for it either. what would you do? any tips appreciated. thanks!

As you say most older cars are worth more as spares than as a whole. But unless you have the space to store it and the ability to dismantle it, and store those parts, then that isn't much of an option.

I suppose you could remove the things that are easily removable which do sell well and can be stored and then call up one of these 'we pay x for any car' scrap services.

I suppose if you were selling it as a running car you'd get more for it at the beginning of the summer rather than now. You could always try advertising it on an enthusiasts forum where you might stand to get a little more for it and be more likely to sell on a project. I think www.mg-rover.org is one of the larger Rover forums.

This might not be as good for you, but I had quite a heavy old Volvo that was in great condition, but had a couple of mechanical problems which cost too much to fix. Rather than trying to brake and sell the parts, or sell it on as a non-runner, I used one of those scrap valuation services and got £250 for it. I doubt a convertible Rover will get you as much (I believe it's based on the weight), but it can't hurt to check.

Just be sure you check out the company properly and they give you proper certification of scrapping if you do go for it.
  • I agree with isaving - scrap car values have gone up a lot in the past few years. Try and find a local scrap dealer though, don't bother with the ones that advertise on TV.
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:
