new laptop or notebook?

Please can anyone offer any help and advice?
My laptop has died and the mother in law has offered to buy "the family" a new one for Christmas.
We only use it for surfing the internet, watching occasional catch up tv and for basic office work with word, excel, outlook etc we would also need to link up our existing printer for letters, kids projects, pictures etc.
Please can anyone advise me should we go for a new laptop or what benefits would a laptop be compared to a notebook, tablet etc?
What do I need to look for when buying ? the best spec to look for etc ? and are there any good deals out there at the moment to buy it prior to Xmas?
:beer:Thanks lots

Ive just bought a tablet, sent it back the same day. I hate the touch screen with a vengeance, yu have to actually look at the screen and if the touch doesnt work, and yu have to touch it again, and again.
Not good if you are doing typing documents or something like that.
Much easier to have a proper keyboard for typing. I have a Packard Bell Easynote. It does the job for me.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The fact you want to watch catch up tv and if 2 people are watching would suggest a laptop, bigger screen.

Argos do a few around the £400 price range, as do PCworld/Currys.

All depends on how is going to be spent
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j
  • I would guess we'd be looking at around £300-£400 but obviously any cheaper would keep us in the good books!!
I think the laptop with a bigger screen is a good suggestion too but something not too awkward to carry around / handle and watch on the sofa and with the kids about etc
Thanks for the comments so far!! :)
  • we have just bought a new laptop, john lewis have a pretty good range and all come with 2 year warranty.

i never even considered a tablet, for me if its main purpose was to use from home only a laptop would do! i also wanted a 17" which are becoming harder to find these days.

Also whenever i've been out and about looking at the tablets and touchscreens they always look dirty and smeared with fingerprints~ that would drive me nuts!

  • As its the only computer in the house I would advise a laptop. Around £300 will get you a decent enough one.

£300-400 laptop is what you needed.
  • I would suggest a laptop as its easier to set boundaries on a laptop over a tablet, but as mententioned in other posts it all really depends on the price
