Is this right? Tax credit/pension/petrol

I rang the tax credit to let them know that my youngest had started school and I only need childcare for the holidays. I asked if I could do my renewal over the phone as I hadn't had the paperwork through yet. Last year my gross pay was £7614, of which £480 was mandatory (nhs) pension contributions and £720 was mileage I had received back from using my car for work (I'm community nurse) (so i pay for the petrol to see patients and put in a claim with my pay) - so my net after that is £6414, and I still had tax and Ni deducted (about £40 per month). The tax credits peeps say the tax credit is based on gross (£7614) - surely that can't be fair? The £720 for petrol is what i've paid and os not a perk.

what you may be best doing is visiting your local tax office with all relevant paper work and get them to sort it out- face to face. Some of these tax credit advisors don't know what they are doing0
