Thank you to Edwardia for putting me straight about the diabetes (and we also have someone with cerebral palsy in the family!)

This person is a right pain though, (type 2 but skinny, not remotely overweight and tells everyone within earshot he's a diabetic) he refuses to change his lifestyle because of his condition and thinks the doctors have got it all wrong. He reads up on all the latest quackery and if he saw something that said a diet of mincepies would cure diabetes he would go for it, whereas advice from the dietician and Diabetes UK and anyone else who might just have read recent authoritative and peer reviewed research is completely ignored. Consequently he visits people, eats and drinks completely stupidly and is then unwell, making everyone else's party a complete misery and washout, totally selfish I reckon. So I want to provide food that is healthy and enjoyable for him as well as being enjoyable for everyone else yet steers clear of any opportunity he might have for spoiling things for others. I'm thinking I might go for a completely veggie Xmas for all of us in fact, a bit different to the usual turkey etc, we'd probably all enjoy it anyway and a good challenge for me as hostess with the mostest.

Lots of good ideas here and I've fed my family on Rose Elliott recipes since the 70s so thanks for the reminder, I'll revisit them.

Like the idea of paneer poppers, have had paneer myself before which I found in ASDA and wow you can really taste the milk in the cheese.

Vegetable fish fingers.. I wonder whether Birds Eye still does the veggie fingers.. used to lurve those with fried eggs and mushrooms :D

Eliza, it sounds to me like your relative is in denial. I went through that stage right after diagnosis because although I was fat (and as an ex chef I wasn't stuffing pizza all day) I'd gone down several dress sizes and was going to the gym. I had none of the classic diabetes symptoms either. Hopefully he will wise up before he gets major problems.

I was diagnosed in 2007, it took me about six months to work through being angry and then I tried but until I started low carbing in 2010 there was no improvement. I'm now nearly size 12 with normal blood glucose most of the time (though I do take medication), great cholesterol etc.

Since he's determined to do what he wants, I think the only thing you can do is make everything low carb ie under 10g per 100g total carbs and that way when he pigs out it will take longer for him to get unwell !

popular choice for my veggie family is olives.
especially the mixes you get of olive, artichoke and feta - usually found near the dips but can also be found in glass jars near the tinned goods (minus the feta)

Another one for the list - have got French picholine olives for her though when they were on offer.

Going to Sainsbury's with my mother tomorrow so any ideas from Sainsbury's would be fantastic ! I've got their Sainsbury's SO organic mayonnaise (240ml 1.45) on my list as well as the Sainsbury's SO organic Highland shortbread fingers (70p).

My mother told me today that she drinks raw unpasteurised whole milk and I'm thinking OMG you can only buy that from farms, how do I get that ??? I tactfully suggested she brought some with her but she said any milk will do. We have Moo organic semi-skimmed UHT so she'll probably think it tastes funny compared to raw :(

    tasty vegetarian canapes/finger food - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/superscrimpers/video/series-3/episode-2/s2-ep2-chic-on-the-cheap-canapes

on the xmas pudding front asda do a really nice ready made pudding - it's in a green wrapper - save yourselves the bother!
other quick easy options - slice the top of some baby tomatoes and stuff with philly,
if your still after ready made options fallafal is a good one - mini quiche - add whatever you like to a tiny circle of puff pastry and you have a mini tart (tomatoes/herbs/onions) good luck!

I gave my mother all the ingredients to make two organic Christmas puds back in September, one for her and my OH to eat Christmas Day and one for her to have with friends. They are made and being fed with brandy - bit worried about this as one year she nearly lost her eyebrows when it was lit.

I low carb as I have diabetes so I'm having a Jello sugar free instant chocolate pudding with clotted cream and a small amount of organic chocolate ice cream instead :D

Like the Philly-filled cherry tomatoes idea..

if she likes nice milk buy it from abel and cole, its non homogenised so the cream rises to the top and according to my oh who is a milk fiend it tastes like milk used to.

he wont drink raw milk as he isn't too keen on the taste plus his sister had to have a tuberculin growth removed from her lung due to drinking untreated milk (many years ago)

Thanks for that suesmith, I will add some milk to my order.

I'd be a bit dubious about drinking raw milk myself too.

Edwardia, Birds Eye still make the veggie fingers. I had them for my tea last night :D I think Asda & Sainsburys do similar versions but nugget like so ideal for buffet food.

Edit: Heron currently have cauldrons thai bites on offer for a pound. Birds eye also do veggie nuggets just like their fingers. Yum!
