How easy is it to fit a garage door

We have got a double garage door and the door itself is ok, we just can't open it up from the outside. We have had someone around to see if it can be repaired, but apparently they do not make the mechanism to open/shut it anymore, so we would have to buy a new door.
Been looking around and they are so expensive so wondered whether we could save and order online and fit ourselves. Has anyone any experience of this?

Was the person who said that a garage door salesman or a repairman?
What part of the mechanism has failed?0 -
if it still opens from the inside you maybe able to just get a new handle/lock
your best option is to get someone else to have a look at repairing instead of trying to squeeze alot of money out of you for a new door0 -
they are not difficult to fit, you just need to follow the instructions and use a bit of common sense. But before you do that, get someone in to look at the problem. There are firms out there who do nothing but repair and install garage doors, look in your local directory.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
It was a repairman from a firm who do nothing but garage doors who said it can't be fixed. I think they sell them as well, but he suggested we keep the door going as long as we can before replacing, but for us it causes problems putting bikes and car away etc so wanted to look at the best option.0
