Unable to delete photos on ipad after ios6 upgrade

Very frustrating. My ipad 3 was refusing connection to server, even when laptop was connected fine, so Apple told me to restore to factory settings and thereby upgrade to iOS 6.

Photo app no longer has a delete/bin icon and IF I can (via edit) call up a delete button ever at all, it's greyed out.
It seems that the only way to delete an individual photo on the ipad is via syncing and re-syncing with the mac laptop, unlike in iOS 5.1.1 where you just binned it.

Has anyone found a way round this? I've googled for hours and just found others complaining, but no real answers.
