Quick question before calling plumber plse

Options
Hi,

If someone could throw any light on this before I call out a plumber, I would be grateful please.

I have a Baxi gas boiler over 22 years old, had it serviced about 8 weeks ago and this week it has started to make a loud roaring noise when the gas burner is on. It doesn't do this all the time especially at a low temperature but if I have the setting on 4 or above, it is doing it. It has never made this noise before.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is? Is it dangerous? The boiler does still switch off after a while.

Many thanks.

You need to remove the lion that has taken up residence and takes exception to having the old tail and mane singed.

Seriously, though, its possibly a faulty gas valve. You need to get someone in to look at it asap.

  • as KS said it could be a gas valve prob, or a number of other things as you haven't told us the model it's all abit of a shot in the dark but you need to get it looked at asap, why don't you get the guy back that serviced it

    Many thanks for your replies.

I will call out the plumber again, I just was hoping to it not being a serious problem.

Call out charge and parts, oh well :)

    Thankyou.

Just wanted to give a quick update.

I rang the same plumber and explained the problem to him who just said he was busy and to call back the next week. Which I did, then he totally ignored me and wouldn't return my calls so I gave up,his details have gone in the bin and I have tried calling two further new plumbers. Once I explain what the boiler is doing they don't seem to be interested and I can't get anyone to come out to see it!!!!!!!!!! Why, is the job not worth their effort?

So basically I gave up over Dec and the xmas period and now have to try and find another reliable plumber. I thought I had found one in the guy who serviced it but obviously not! I'm so annoyed as I had planned to use this one to replace the whole system in the summer months.

Anyway the boiler still makes the same noise, it has been turned down to the lowest setting and I only put the heating on when absolutely necessary. I've looked into the matter and some reasons for the noise could be its 'back-lighting' or something.

So angry, some tradesmen really annoy me! Rant over and apologies to those in the trade who are worthwhile.

for starters you need a RGI not a plumber, if you go onto the gas safe web site & click on find an installer it will give you a list in your area, however just because they install boilers & have them on their ticket doesn't mean to say they repair them, if you tell us where you are someone might be able to recommend someone

Yes it isn't a plumber you need for one minute its a heating engineer.

Have you tried the Baxi/Potty servicing arm - Heateam?

    Cheers

Sorry, my wrong use of the word plumber.

All 3 people I called were registered gas safety engineers, in fact the guy who serviced the boiler also installed a new radiator for me at the same time. Plus we discussed the possible costs of putting a new system in so he knew he would have further work sent his way.

I tend to go with recommendations by other people hence my not ringing up any other engineers as yet. After paying for some work not done on a previous occasion, I find I am now unfortunately suspicious of who I trust.

I will look at the gs register for someone else nearest to me.

Sorry my post of yesterday was pure rant.

No, not as yet. Will look into that today whilst at work. I put the heating on again this morning and the noise didn't occur for a while. When it did start, it wasn't on long as fortunately the burner is still turning off once the temp is reached. It was nice to have warm radiators for a while :)

    Thanks
