Regional variation

Could someone enlighten me, please, as to why the price of gas and electricity varies from region to region? A few months ago Utilities Warehouse visited me with their package, and the price depended on whose area I would have been in pre-sell off days.

There's a good explanation on the Ebico website as to why prices differ by region, particularly for electricity (Ebico charge the same unit price nationwide for their gas) :)

  • Thank you for this information - as usual, so many different bodies involved :(
  • Its to do with costs of transporting the energy, further away from the source adds to the costs

There are huge distance-related power losses on electricity supply due to resistance, not so on gas.

Maybe Ebico have got it all wrong then?

Isn't all the electricity pumped into our National Grid from where it is distributed?
I wonder how much more it costs (or is lost due to resistance) in sending Electricity from the nuclear power stations in France to say London, compared to say Dover?

Or perhaps how much difference it'll cost to pipe gas from Russia to Birmingham compared to Russia to Aberdeen?

It's 'pumped in' from wherever it's generated. Whic is usually not near where it's most used.
Most of the transport cost of importing gas is a result of the countries through which the pipelines pass levying a fee per cubic metre transmitted. Not an actual cost, effectively a tranportation tax.
