Car Hire - One way fees

I need to hire a car to get me from manchester airport to gatwick, and then another one to get me back again two weeks later. Thought holiday autos deal was quite cheap until I realised there was a £35 drop off fee on each trip - so a total of £70 extra to pay! (aint booked it yet though)
Any ideas on how to avoid this? I've only ever hired cars where I've been dropping them off to the original location. Seems a bit crap really - I wonder if they would just put my car to one side when I drop it off, and give me the same one back when I return?

I hired a car recently for Exeter to Stansted directly with Europcar and there was a one-way charge of 14.99, it was the best I could get0

Hey, cheers for that. I actually get a discount with Holiday Auto's, so with them I can get a ford fiesta for £74, including the drop off charge
With Europcar I can get a Ford Focus for £75...think I'll go with them instead

If you don't need to break the journey have you thoght about flying, book far enough in advance & it could be less than £75 + fuel
BA, 1st week in may ~£45 one way inc taxex0 -
I've hired cars a few times from http://www.bcvr.co.uk/ and not been charged a one way fee.0

That does look good, its a bit strange because it is the Europcar website with a bit of British Car Rental branding on it, it even says 'powered by Europcar' on it
The car hire I am paying £75 for is only £51 on here - if prepaid!
I'll definately keep that in mind for next time, thanks amf0 -

Yes, any car I've hired through them has always been from Europcar. I've never had a problem:)0 -
Many independent companies have contracts with europcar - it may be cheaper to hire with them than europcar direct! when i worked for a large international car rental company i could hire cheaper through an independent who used the company i worked for than hiring directly with them using my staff discount mad mad mad.
OWR fees are charged by most car rental companies - if it is a well trafficed route sometimes they dont charge as other hires take the cars back to the original destination IYSWIM.
Would holiday autos pricematch a quote from another company that has a cheaper OWR fee and honour your discount? worth trying?
good luck!Debt free May 2016 (without the support of MSE forum users that would never have been possible - thank you all)0 -
