Rejected for credit card

Hi Everyone,

I've just been rejected by Tesco when applying for their 16 months 0%APR credit card and I have no idea why. I earn £20k a year and my monthly outgoings are £600 (leaving over £700 spare) - I'm living with my fiance and have never had debt problems in my life. I'm over 25, been living in our flat for over a year, but lived with my parents in the same house since I was born.

Any idea why I wouldn't be eligible for a credit card?

Thanks,
Nick

  • What's your credit history like? Have you actually had any credit in the past? Are you on the electoral roll?

Well the best people to ask would be Tesco. In the meantime...

    1. Are you on the electoral roll?
    2. Were you on the electoral roll at your parents' address?
    3. Have you had any credit products in the past?
    4. How many credit accounts are shown on your credit report?
    5. Have you even looked at your credit reports?
    6. Are you financially associated with your fiance? If so, does he have a poor credit history?
  • 1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. No
    4. I've never had a credit report
    5. See 4
    6. No, she doesn't and I'm not financially associated with her.

    3. No
There's your most probable reason. You can't provide any history of credit management. You may have to go to your bank for your first credit card. If they say no then try one of the credit builder cards such as Vanquis, Aqua, etc.
    4. I've never had a credit report
Might be a good idea to order one and check there are no underlying issues.
    6. No, she doesn't
So she's your fiancee then. ;)
  • Hi guys,

Sorry - I've just had my credit report and it looks like I've not updated my Electoral roll. Will be updating this now, but as far as everything else it's all green and looks fine.

    Cheers,
    Nick

    Massively significant.

They can't prove where you live, so they won't give you credit.
