Refund applied to credit card in following billing cycle

Recently I bought a table and chairs online for £450, which I paid on my MBNA cashback credit card. I didn't like the look of them when they arrived so I sent them back to the supplier for a full refund.

Annoyingly, the refund credit was applied on the 24th which is after the end of my billing cycle of the 22nd. The original payment for the chairs was made on the 19th so is on my bill for November. The payment goes out on December 10th (I always pay in full.)

This is annoying, as I effectively have to lend MBNA £450 interest free for a month, and I have a huge credit balance on my card. Worse, I understand I am at risk of losing this if there happens to be fraud on my account whilst it is in credit, as CC companies don't cover credit balances. Has anyone else every been in this situation? Is there anything I can do to get he £450 credit applied to my last bill so I can get rid of it? The only option I can see is to just make the minimum payment this month so my balance stays in debit, but I am loathe to do that on a cashback card as it defeats the point!

  • Phone them up and check. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't accept the credit as payment of the account - it should appear on your account before payment is due on 10th December.

    Hey,

I can't speak for MBNA, but I do this a lot with my credit card and it counts the refund n the next statement as a payment, my direct debit in full is then reduced by the amount that has been refunded.

It'll be in your terms and conditions. I know mine specifically say that a credit is not considered as payment, but if the payment makes you in credit, you can request a refund after its been processed.

Just make a one-off payment now of statement balance - £450. When DD is paid, call them and ask them to refund it as you've already paid the full balance. I do this a lot replacing a DD full payment with a BT and they always refund the DD immediately
