Printers...photocopiers...ink

I thought this was the best board to ask...:)

I need to do some ordering for work and i'm a bit stumped

What is the difference between toner and ink cartridges? Do all printers have both? Can some printers run with just toner?

I tried to order a cartridge for an HP printer, but it the company only seem to sell toner for that particular printer!?

I have no idea at all!! Tried googling but the answers make no sense to me at all!

Toners are for laser printers and photocopiers. Cartridges are generally for ink jet printers.

Ooooh thats brilliant!! Righty, so my HP laserjet printer will use toner, and the normal (older?) printers will be using the ink cartridges...

And somehow you have managed to mak over 10000 posts on this forum.

They are both called cartridges toner and inkjet. ink is wet and applied to the paper by a jet from a print head.

Toner is a fine dry powder, the paper is charged and the toner sticks to parts of the paper. then is fused to the paper so it doesnt rub off.

You should be able to go to any supplier and tell them you want a cartridge for "Insert printer make and model" and they will sell one to you. You shouldnt need to know the difference.
