It is not very unlikely that it will need replacing, it's more often than not a fault on the expansion vessel at least 8 out of 10 times. Granted its a possibility it may need pumping back up but if its lost its original gas then its usually for a reason.
We can't tell you anything other than what it may be as we aren't there, its a big guess. Get back the guy you had if you trust him or ask around for a recommendation. I think anymore advice and you're going to get confused or worried over something that may turn out to be nothing more than an open filling loop.
  • i find it more strange that the pipe froze in sept
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • I know why! It terminated into the fridge or she's in Norway!

I must recharge 100 to every 1 I replace and that will be due to a leak more often than not. The rubber in these things is so thick it's virtually indestructible. As long as it's recharged with an open drain point on the system and the condensation is removed (lots sometimes) the chances are it will be fine, if not I'd be changing the schraeder valve core. It more often than not loses its pressure over the summer when it is not under much use, same as your bike tyres will be flat when spring comes!
Who knows though, could be the 1 in 100 which is shafted!
  • Thank you to all for your advice on this. A different engineer from the same company is calling round on Friday to check it out. He sounded a bit of a drip (excuse the pun but I'm becoming an expert on drips!) so I hope he knows what he is doing.

He asked if I have to top the boiler up because of the constant dripping from the outside pipe. I said that I didn't and don't know how to. As the heating is still working, albeit a bit noisily, would that suggest this loop thing is permanently open?

I don't live in Norway I'm near Birmingham, but given the choice ...............:rotfl:

I'm getting slightly sidetracked with advice here, if your pressure is high and dripping constantly and doesn't drop down even when the heating has cooled down then your expansion vessel won't be involved in the fault. In this case it will probably be the filing loop passing as mentioned, but on the modena is equally quite likely to be a pinholed main heat exchanger. You could isolate the cold water into the boiler if you were confident enough to, if it stops dripping heat exchanger, if not, filling loop.(unless you have a passing shower / washing machine / mixer tap!!)
