Flooded Kitchen with Faulty Screwfix Pipe

Hi there
I was wondering if anyone could advise regarding flooding to our kitchen yesterday.
We returned home to find water in the hall, kitchen and dining area. We managed to turn the water off and mopped up as best we could however it's likely that we'll need to replace the wooden laminate flooring in the dining area and hall.
We found the cause of the leak to be a faulty connector which we purchased from Screwfix about 3 months ago.
I phoned up my insurance company today and was told I had a £250 excess plus another £250 for escape of water. Obviously that's a considerable amount and it might not be worth claiming based on the amount of damage and cost to replace.
Can anyone advise as to whether Screwfix would be liable as it was fitted correctly and would appear to be a defective product.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks
Chris

How on earth will you be able to prove it was a Screwfix component that failed? 1), You might not have fitted it correctly in the first place, 2), You could have bought the component after the event, and 3), The damage to the component could have been done by you after the event.
Good luck with that.0 -
I also think your main concern would be returning your house back to normal and not already thinking about litigation?0

Who fitted the pipe? You need to claim from them.
They obviously fitted a part and didnt test it properly.
Bought pipes and connectors from screwfix for my pond.
I always pressure check where possible and check for visible
leaks for some time after.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hey chaps, thanks for your replies, much appreciated.
makeyourdaddyproud, the house is already back to normal. Thankfully it didn't damage any furniture just the flooring. The component is a single unit, basically a pipe with two bits to screw on so you can't really not fit it correctly. Obviously the reason I was thinking about liability was due to to my poor insurance policy choice but I don't mind accepting the blame!
forgotmyname, ff it's a case of the fitters then I shall be having words with a family member although the pipe was tested and lies behind the dishwasher out of the way of anything that may have caused the damage.
I will however endeavor to keep an eye on it from now on as I can see it behind the kickboards.
Thanks again, I will be a bit more wary next time!0
