  • Hullo house mate number two here.

How do I know that Sally did not organise the switch to the deal that gave her the best kickback rather than gave the house the lowest energy bills?

By all means let Sally explain what she has done and be amazed when her generous house mates say "you keep it", however keeping it quiet will be the toxic shock, if and when the truth gets out.
I would draw the line after (say) Tesco points can be kept by the house mate who does the shopping, even that can be the cause of resentment as I learned to my cost when I bought something that included a travel voucher for a cheap ticket (for one vehicle) in the name of the credit card used.

Bankers and power companies are hated, in part because they are not transparent in their dealings - so if you want to be judged as a PPI salesman, carry on keep it quiet.

An experience like that would make you extra cautious in the future!

I still think I'd be happy for Sally to keep the money for her efforts, assuming a normal, trusting relationship with her. If she hadn't spent time looking for a better deal, I'd still be paying the higher rate.
  • Keep it.
If you are responsible for the bill you will be paying the extra when the costs go up again
