London break- where to stay?

I am planning to go to London for a short break in January (either the 4th or 11th for two nights).
I want to visit the National History Museum and do a bit of shopping in Camden. Does anyone know of a suitable area that would make it easy to get to both these places? I expect if it was zone 1 and near a tube station that'd be enough, but I don't know London at all so haven't got a clue where to start looking.
I was hoping to pay no more than £70 a night and was looking at Travelodge originally, but there's a lot to choose from.
If anyone has any recommendations that would be great.

We stayed in London with our 2 boys a couple of years ago. We stayed at the Premier Inn in Wembley so although a 9 minute tube journey in it was so cheap we stayed for 3 nights.
Kids eat breakfast for free at Premier Inn's and it was fine.
Don't know about styaing closer, you pay more.

The Pembury hotel or Jurys Inn in Islington are both very nice and reasonably priced, very near to Camden on the tube.0

What are your arrival and departure points into the city? Rail station? Airport?
There's little point in booking a hotel on the other side of the city from there, giving you a trail to get to the hotel to start with, then another trail across the city to leave; I tend to get hotel near the rail station, so on departure day I can check out, and be in the station within a few minutes, that way I know I'll get my train.0 -
Thanks all, I shall look into your suggestions

That's a good point about how I'm travelling. I'll be taking a train from Birmingham most likely so it will be either be Marylebone or Euston. I was going to have a look into coaches as well in case a saving can be made there so I'll sort that out first before choosing a hotel.0 -
If you hotel near Euston or KX, it's a direct tube from KX to S Kensington, a short walk from NH Museum
kX also tubes direct to Camden
This might help

Have a look at the Greenroom 2 nights for 1 Holiday Inn offer. You can get 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Express for £80 which includes free breakfast. Think its easy to get to the museum from there but not sure about Camden though.0
