PS3 or XBox 360 - advice please.

Hi there,
Please could you tell me which you think would be best for a 9 year old boy?
My lad enjoys playing driving games and Lego games on the Wii but not sure what would be the best console to get next?
Any advice would be greatly received.
Many thanks

    Each will have their followers.

Will he want to play online with his mates now or in the future?

    PS3 is free.

    XBox subscription I think.

What games do his friends have and what consoles?

We have been play station people through 2 & 3. Interenet, Blu Ray and iplayer have been useful too.

  • Woodyt,

We have both consoles in our house. Our PS3 is in the living room as it can be used to play blu ray films. My son uses the Xbox from an upstairs room. Both consoles are very similar in the quality and range of games they offer. Most of the top titles come out simultaneously for both platforms, however there are a few titles restricted to just one of the platforms ie the Halo series is Xbox only and Gran Tourismo is PS3 only.

Both offer on-line gaming, both now come with built in wi-fi connectivity (Xbox didn't used to). The Playstation network (the online gaming system) is free subscription whereas Xbox costs around £30 per year. PS3 has blu ray, Xbox doesn't. The Xbox controllers are slightly bulkier to hold. Both offer TV players like BBC iplayer.

If I were you i'd assess what his friends have as the online gaming is great and something he will undoubtedly use more and more as he gets older. The two systems are not cross compatible for online gaming. ie if he has a PS3 he can't play against his friends who have and Xbox and vice-versa. Do you need blu ray playability? Would you like to have free online gaming or pay a fee? Also shop around and see where the best deals are on the console packages.

    Hope this helps!

I personally prefer PS3, my son prefers Xbox. Horses for courses I suppose!

Many thanks for all the advice
  • Hi woodyt,

Honestly, it's best to ask your son regarding the one he would prefer. Both have their pros and cons ( I'm a ps3 user and love it, but like to use Xbox as well - Halo, Fable...a long time ago ). The only reason I didn't purchase an xbox was because of the pay-to-play-online, and because I had so many ps1 and ps2 games.

Please keep in mind that both Xbox and PS3 are going to be coming out with their newer generation consoles in 2014. This current generation has been quite long.

Don't forget to check out some of the bundles that you can get for xbox and ps3. One of them may have some games that you were wanting to buy anyways.

    Hope this helps.

I have a PS3 and Move is rubbish compared to konnect, if that is something he would play on...
  • As another poster says, it kind of depends on what his friends/schoolmates have as chances are, he'll want to play with them and you can't play with someone on a Xbox if you have a PS3. There isn't much between them really games wise. They both have thier exclusives. If it's going in a family area on a nice big TV then the PS3 is a nice option as it has a bluray player in it for them super crisp films.

Its a tough one, as both consoles offer the same range. We have both, we bought our Son an Xbox Kinect to assist with his special needs. Games for either sell for roughly the same price, games availability is pretty much equal for both.

As many have already said on this thread, its best to find out what his friends are playing with, I imagine its 50-50 for both consoles, but your better off finding out which your Son prefers.

If its a surprise for Xmas, I would take him along to the likes of Toys r Us and watch which console he favours as he plays the demonstrators.

  • Good advice about finding out what his friends have -- that should be the clincher.

Personally I've always preferred xbox, but it's a personal choice!

    Wow, a first!
A discussion of what games console to get without the name calling and my machine is better than yours mental attitude.

Like others have said, see what his friends have got, that way they can swap games and play online together.

I have an X-box, only decided on that because all my friends had one and we used to swap games (saves a fortune on keep buying them) and have games online together.
