Epson injet printers-can they check if you are using compatable inks?

Hi folks,

With the price of printer ink I am always trying as most other people are to keep the costs as low as possible.

I have had an epson sx200 all in one for 3 or 4 years now, cost only £30-£40 when I bought it at probably argos if I remember correctly.

I have been very lucky in that I can get 10 replacememt catridges from ebay for £5, most of the times they work ok and printer recognises the catridge.

I dont print a great deal of stuff but still need a printer around.
and looking for a cheap backup printer just in case the epson goes wrong.

1 does anyone know of another current model of epson all in one where the compatable catridges are just as cheap as my sx 200?

2 is it possible that Epson are able to keep tabls on what catridges are put into printer over the internet or through updated driver etc, I have always this sneaking suspicion that they could do.

Thanks very much

  • Why would they bother? They have no control over what ink you use - they sell a printer not a complete package (ie lifetime consumables). its your printer once you have bought it - use what you like.

No idea about other printers - though I will say after using Epsom for 12+ years I migrated to HP, and havent looked back.

The printer is capable of detecting compatibles but is unlikely to pass it back or be able to pass it back to Epson. There is an option for the printer to check for software updates, though that is also unlikely to concern itself with the type of cartridges in use.

If you prefer compatibles, then firmware updates are best avoided

The new XP Expression printers don't have widely available compatibles at the moment

You could look for a suitable printer on the Epson site, then look elsewhere for compatibles

The T0715 set you currently use will work in quite a few Epson's

  • Thanks very much for replies and the helpful list of printers that use the same catridges.

Just wondering in the long term is it better to ditch the inkjet and get a laser, just wondering are they a lot cheaper than inkjets to run?

    Thanks

Would you get a mono or colour laser?

I have an Epson, I use compatibles, it works, can't believe they monitor, so what if they do.

If you don't print much I can't believe the cost, of a laser, would be worth it.

They don't monitor back but they DO block compatibles now and then when they work out a vulnerability in some and can do it via firmware updates, people have found their usual supply suddenly stop working. With a new Epson its advisable to disable auto updates and only buy a small supply of compatible cartridges to test first, then buy in bulk from same supplier, then you won't have any issues.
