    First off, why do you want to change from E7?
    Have you checked that you will actually save money on a single rate tariff?

    If so, what is that supplier/tariff?
  • I have an E9 meter (apparently) and have been on a single rate tariff with BG for 5+ years now, just have to give them the readings from the 2 meters each time.

    When I enquired earlier this year, BG said it would cost about £65 to change the meter.

    We have switched from an E7 tarrif and were told the meter doesn't need to be changed.
    I think if you dont have a E7 meter and want to change TO E7,they have to change it as the single kind cant calculate the different amounts but if you are changing the other way,it doesn't need to be.

    The reason for the questions is that they are imnportant and if you do decide to change to a single rate tariff, then the choice of supplier will dictate the answer.

    Sadly, as often appears the case lately on MSE, it is those easy questions that the OP so often finds so difficult to answer.

    They were still here when I asked, but then logged off before answering. Oh well ... :(
  • Yes it is about £65 - £70 per annum cheaper. unless my usage goes even higher. Simple question whilst @ work sorry I couldn't hang around

    Check that you are being billed on day and night rates. I see many eco 7 meters who have arranged with Brit Gas to be billed single rate, no need to change the meter. Personally I would nt be too happy to pay BG for the privelidge, especially when eco 7 people who dont have night storage heaters or are using at least 30% of total energy, have been ripped off for years

    HiYa, no you're not tied to a tariff, you can have any tariff you choose.

    Your problem may be how your house is wired. You see the E7 tariff was / is for night store water & space heating. These heaters use two separate 20amp ring mains that are completely out of your control, they automatically switch on at midnight [ish] and off at 7am [ish, in addition to all the normal wiring in any house. What that means in some cases depending on your wiring is :

    - if you change the meter all your water & heating will be turned off forever, or ;
    - if you change the meter all, the whole everything, will be turned off after midnight [ish], or ;

    What you need to tell the group is what type of water & space heating you have in your home, then we can begin to help. BTW you don't need to take out or change your meter, many energy suppliers will leave the two rate meter there and combine [aggregate] the two rates [registers] to give you a standard tariff type pricing.

    - furrybloke, you need to know how your house is wired up before you make a move !
    - do you have night store heating ?, and is your water heated at night ?

    have a look here and ........... here for some info then come back and ask questions. Best of luck !
