I shut down my laptop about 5 times a day, is this bad?

Am i better of just doing it at the end of the day? I basically use it for a few hours then shut down and then maybe use it again after a few hours etc.
I have noticed that my wireless connections keeps dropping and i always have to go and unplug/replug the router, im not sure if this is because of the shutting down thing or if the router is faulty.
Putting it into standby is another option but i feel as though i will still have the same internet connection dropping issue, maybe i should just shut down at the end of the day and see how it goes?

Just leave it till you know you arenot going to use it again. It will automaticallly go into standby mode. Just shut it down once a day.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I put my laptop in hibernation instead during the day, sometimes even at night! I'm the opposite of you I rarely turn it off!0

Switching your router on and off is also bad, each time it needs to resynch. It uses only a few watts. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hibernation is little different to turning it off.I put my laptop in hibernation instead during the day, sometimes even at night! I'm the opposite of you I rarely turn it off!
The only difference is that the contents of RAM are saved to the hard disk and are reloaded on resumption of power.
Everything is powered down during hibernation just as if it is switched off. No electricity is used when in hibernation.
Sleep mode is different. That does use some power but enables a slightly quicker restart.0 -
Hi Timbon,
While not bad, this certainly isn't helping your current computing needs. If you were only using your computer maybe 3 time a day, then sure, go ahead and shut down your computer.
Because you use your computer numerously throughout the day, hibernation is your best bet. Use the sleep function if you will be coming back to your computer in a much shorter period of time. I tend to unplug any peripherals if i'm doing the hibernation/shut down as many draw power upon startup or awakening... but that's me. I can save how much?!0 -
That depends on whether it has been set to hibernate/standby/close down after x minutes of non-use.Just leave it till you know you arenot going to use it again. It will automaticallly go into standby mode.
Indeed, many people don't realize they can also save power at the mains when in hibernation. No electricity is used when in hibernation.0 -

That DOES warrant investigation.timbon wrote:I have noticed that my wireless connections keeps dropping and i always have to go and unplug/replug the router, im not sure if this is because of the shutting down thing or if the router is faulty.
Try turning your wireless off and back on at the laptop (usually a button above the keyboard).0
