And nearly a million people die of hunger every month; but god forbid our government spend less than 1% of its budget doing something about that (~£200 per person). After all it took us all so much hard work and dedication to be born in an incredibly wealthy country didn't it; it's a Brits basic fundamental right to live well even if we never work.
+ In 1950 a very poor Malaysia declined aid. By 2000 it was 16th richest nation.
+ S Korea largely declined aid, and went from dirt poor to top 10 in 40 years
+ Since 1985 the number of Afcricans living on less than $1.00 per day has doubled
+ Aid allows inefectual Government to persist
+ Aid is racist. White middle class missionaries infantalisng Africans who left alone would be as capable as anyone.0 -
Sorry, but whilst we have genuine needy causes in the UK, I cannot see the point in sending cash abroad. And nearly a million people die of hunger every month; but god forbid our government spend less than 1% of its budget doing something about that (~£200 per person). Surely they can find some real savings...instead of this across the board stuff....
The previous government were said to be wastefull...so where is all the waste...we should have a list of £100bn or more by now if thats the case..
Maybe they're not trying hard enough...or its not that simple to do.
I've got add that I've worked in public and private...theres waste everywhere.0 -
My cuts list;
+ Foreign aid excluding dire emmergency aid
+ 90% armed forces cuts. Just have a border force of the kind many advanced nations make do with
+ Pull out of Afghanistan today
+ Cancel Trident. Again plenty of developed nations don't lose sleep over thier lack of nuclear weapons
+ Slash welfare to all but the truly disabled. I've known many brave disabled people that work.
+ Slash all PS pensions such that they are more or less in same position as the rest of us with either no or a modest pension. I met a recently retired GP who's pension pot is £4.2m. Just one bloke, no wonder we have so much debt.0 -

I'm perfectly happy to debate the benefits/cost of foreign aid; however that is a rather more nuanced debate than the reason why most people don't like foreign aid: They don't give a toss about the suffering of people who aren't like them and didn't get the huge head-start in life that being born in a wealthy nation is.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Yes your'e right that people lack empathy for foreigners. I encounter this with those dreadful help for heros bucket shakers when I point out the true heros with vastly less to fall back on are the 100,000 Afghan children orphaned and maimed by our heroic troops actions.
My Dad was an Army man and I watch documentaries behind the lines. All this hero stuff is so utterlly misleading. In every documentary I've seen the squaddies say things such as "killing rag heads is better than sex, after this hi there's nothing better in life". Another was a helo pilot casually refering to Afghan women through his sights as "there's a snake with t1tts at 3 oclock". She turned out to be an innocent civi.
I nearly joined the Army and us recruits all talked of playing out video game scenarious for real. Not one had anything remotely heroic in mind.
I've met a real WW2 hero and isn't it ironic that this true heroic guy gets very irrate if people refer to him as heroic. He's dignified and understated, the mark of a true hero.0 -

Or, Get your own house in order before worrying about the neighbours.
Foreign aid should be left to charity and be voluntary.0 -

I wouldn't mind if it actually worked on a reasonably proportionate scale.
Trillions of dollars over 40 years and yet Africans are now poorer per capita that 40 years ago.
People let thier emmotions get in the way of evidence.
Nothing more sickly than the sight of Lenny Henry emploring us to dig deep to get to that £20m, when he, one Man is worth more than that sum! More sickening a thing I cannot imagine.0 -

We (the west) have poured multi millions into the congo.
The outcome is a a well paid elite and lots of armed groups killing and raping.
It's not just about cost/benefits; it's about the positive harm we are causing.0 -

We could spend 5% of our budget the same number would die of hunger every month.
How much of our aid actually gets in to families mouths on the ground or real projects that deliver something on the ground?
How much gets diverted on the way or into projects that are engineered by other "first" world state they we simply pay for. How many "rich countries are we funding" absolving their own governments from responsibility.
With growing food banks supplementing welfare in our own country I do think that charity begins at home.
When we are running comfortable surpluses then we can be magnanimous."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
