Hijackthis Report

Hi

As posted earlier, I am having problems with my laptop again and have managed to get a report this morning.

Could somebody have a look and tell me if they spot anything.

Windows starts as normal, the screen starts, all appears normal and then it either restarts or if I go into safe mode and ask for it to start ignoring errors it will load up and then a blue screen displays sayinging it cannot continue.

I had big problems last week with a virus/trojan and thought evertything had been sorted as the computer had been running much better in the last few days and all checks came up clear.

I have found something which rings alarm bells, windows\system32\smss.exe.

I checked on a site and it read this is a trojan/virus but I cannot find it on the system.

Could anybody hav a read through the report and shed some light.

Thanks

Martin

Few immediate thoughts come to mind.

First your HJT file is not in a permanent location. The program makes automatic backups and these could be lost. Please go to the HJT folder and move it to a more secure place such a directly on to your C: drive.

Secondly your log is incomplete. The headers are missing. They should look something like this ...

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 5:15:23 PM, on 8/6/2005
    Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)

Please ensure your next log has these included.

Lastly ... which protection programs do you use? Antivirus, firewall, antispyware etc.?

Please answer these questions and post a fresh, complete, HJT log.

I'm not sure how to move the HJT file, could you explain how to do this.

As far as Antivirus etc, I had just removed Norton 06 as it was going to expire, I did use the Norton removal tool. I was going to replace this with AVG, but have not done so with the problem I am having. I also run Spybot and Spydoctor.

    Thanks

You really should have a decent firewall and antivirus in place. Without them any computer that goes online will be a magnet for malware.

First things first .... make sure you have both installed, up & running. Carry out full system scans with them (preferably in safe mode, if you can) and they will fix what they find.

(NOTE >> you seems to have Kapersky antivirus installed somewhere on this computer. Is it in use? Why is it there?)

If that smss.exe "suspect" file you mention is running from the right location (which it is in your case) then it is safe. More on it here .....

    http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/smss/

No need to worry any more about HJT being in an unsafe location. It is now running from your desktop.

The problem you are having may be due to faulty drivers or with hardware issues not necessarily malware.

The only entry immediately to go in the log is this one ...

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE.

Open HJT again ... click on scan ... put a tick/check mark next to that entry IF it's still present and close ALL open browser windows (including this one) before clicking "Fix checked" at the foot of the HJT window.

Now search your system for this file ...

    ALCMTR.EXE

    ...and delete it.

    Empty your recycle bin.

Now try to download, install, update and run both programs mentioned below in safe mode. If you can't do it in safe mode try normal mode. Use the default settings for both and let them fix whatever they want to.

If you can't download these directly to the affected machine then download/update on a connected computer and transfer the .exe files to the laptop via disk.

    Ccleaner >

    http://www.ccleaner.com/
(Download it WITHOUT the optional Yahoo Toolbar; you must untick/uncheck the relevant box on download)

    AVG Anti Spyware >

    http://www.ewido.net/en/
(It has a fully working 30 day trial period).

Save the AVG AS scan report and post it back here with a fresh HJT log AND an update on how your laptop is working now.

    Hi

    Thanks for the response.

I will do as you say in your response but I cannot get it into safe mode at the moment and it may get to tomorrow before I can get it hooked up to the internet again.

I will get everything done and then post up the results.

    Thanks again

I am now having major problems.

I managed to get the system working again yesterday for a short period but I now getting the computer to log on in either safe mode or normal mode.

I normal mode it does as nnormal then lots of warnig boxes pop up and a blue screen appears. Safe mode starts and the seems to freeze.

It's an Acer laptop and I did back up but not to disc, just to computer so I cannot get to it.

I will have to keep trying but it does not look good
