Fixing a Shelving Unit to the Wall

Ok, so, I'm making a shelving unit to fit above the bed.

Lets imagine that it is retagle shape (approx 200cm x 100cm), it will have an additional 3 horizontal shelves within the rectangle and a single vertical support in the middle. Sort of like:

I'm planning on building it with quite chunky frame / shelves (25mm), so weight is a consideration.

And, it will not be backed with any board.

Soooooooooo, any expert DIYers or carpentry bods out there with an idea of how to fix it to the wall?

I'm not talking about use of raw plugs or bolts, or anchoring in to thermalite blocks etc but how do I achieve an invisible fixing?

Any ideas?

  • Keyhole plates on the back of the 3 upright pieces? Hang them on securely fixed screws.
  • Make the top and bottom shelves floating and fit a battern to the wall.

Hi Sgt Pepper, I am interested in your suggestion.

I thought about making the shelves thickness 'oversized' so as to accommodate that approach. Have you done something similar and how did it go?

I'm interested because of weight consideration. When I was considering making all the shelves 'floating' ones I was wondering how much weight they could reasonably take.

    Floating Shelves Idea
The shelves are probably going to be about 17cm deep. So just sticking with the 'floating' shelf idea on its own for the moment. I can imagine we will start to clutter them up with some books and trinkets so each shelf could end up with a fair number of books etc. Any idea on what weight a floating shelf fixed to 5cm x 5cm batten would take before the shelf might start to tilt down at the front edge?

Floating Shelf Unit (Batten Top / Bottom)
I like this idea as it would get around my concern about the front edge of the shelves possibly 'dropping' after time, as the vertical pieces would add that extra strength/support.
