Insurance fraud/ police report PLEASE HELP

Ok so last night I lost my phone in a public place. I got the contract in August and bought insurance at the same time - insurance recommended on this site and I particularly chose a good, expensive policy that I thought I could trust.
After coming home to find out what I had to do to claim, I came to the conclusion I was not covered as I had lost it in a public place and it wasn't taken from me at knife point - 'actual or threatened force'. This led to much anger and upset, to the point I thought sod the insurance company I am claiming back my phone as they say they cover loss but don't actually! So I made up a story about being mugged behind a shop near where I lost my phone and phoned up the police, and after they same round asked some questions. I know this is very stupid and irresponsible of me, I truly regret it now and feel awful about myself for lying and wasting the time of two lovely police officers. Anyway I got cold feet and didn't sign the police report and asked for it not to be filed at all, claiming fear of the 'mugger'.
Now I have rang up the insurance company to inquire when they do in fact pay out for loss as they are advertising fraudulently in my opinion. And lo and behold I can actually claim in my circumstances. I obviously didn't tell them about the not-filed police report. But to claim (perfectly legitimately) that I lost my phone in the circumstances that I did, I have to file a lost property claim with the police. Considering that I didn't file the police report am I OK to do this? Also what penalties could I incur if I am completely found out - I am very tempted to come completely clean with the police.
I would really appreciate some advice as I am very upset about the whole ordeal and have no idea what could happen.

Are you serious?
If you are, forget the whole thing now, buy a s/h handset from eBay and hope the officers had some real work to do that evening that stopped them thinking too clearly about your report.0 -
So you attempt fraud and then accuse the insurers of advertising fraudulently.
You have the morals of a slug.
Of course you should come clean with the police but I doubt you will. Be prepared for a charge against you of at least wasting police time. You will then have to declare a criminal offence to any future insurer.0 -
Expect at the least a penalty ticket for £80 for wasting police time, you will be made an example of for this with a hard line taken. They do this as they waste so much time dealing with false reports like this and then get criticised when they are too busy with this rubbish to turn promptly go to a real proper crime.
As soon as you give your name to make the lost report they will see on the computer that you made this false other report and didn't follow it through.
They will also contact your phones network either directly or via the national mobile phone register online and have check too see if you have reported this 'theft' as part of their routine enquiries even though you didn't follow through with the report.
If you say nothing, don't try to make a lost report and suck for the cost yourself you might hear nothing more, but trying to report it lost now is asking for trouble.
Of course, the honest thing to do would be to contact the officers you spoke to ASAP, own up and fall on your sword.
They won't be happy, but they will be even less happy weeks down the line if they have investigated the made up mugging and the found out you've lied.
Just because you didn't sign on the dotted line for what ever reason you gave them doesn't mean they will just say oh well, never mind, well pretend it didn't happen.0 -
So even though I asked not to file a police report they will still follow it up? I have decided against making any kind of claim from the insurance.0
-
Just to clarify I have not made a lost property claim and do not plan on doing so.0

But I did ring up the insurance company today, everything I said was true. They have sent me forms but I am not going to fill anything in.
I will take all of your comments about how I am very very stupid and have no morals and put them alongside the judgements of my own - and they pale in comparison. I can't tell you how upset I am that I got myself into this.0 -
