Warranty questions

Hi there,
This is perhaps not big news, but I am a little perplexed.
I bought a dishwasher from Argos online. I bought it with the understanding that I would receive free delivery, free installation and free removal of the old model.
Having taken time off work for the delivery slot, the delivery man saw that the old model was wired into a wall point, not a socket. He said that he was unable to remove the old model, nor install the new model, and also, that, were I to remove the plug on the new model, the warranty would be nullified.
I rang Indesit directly and was told the same thing; that by removing the plug and running the wires directly into a built in socket, I would be causing wilful malicious damage to the product.
I installed the last dishwasher myself, blissfully unaware of this caveat, but am now stuck. I have not unwrapped the new model, it is still as was delivered, but I don't know how to proceed.
Have you any suggestions?

  • What do you mean by built in socket ? If you had a socket you could simply plug it into that. Do you mean that it's wired direct to a box with no means of isolating the dishwasher without turning off the mains.

  • Hi there,
Thank you for replying to me, I think I may have to solve it in a different way. The kitchen appliances ( white goods) in our house are all wired to wall switches. So when I buy a new appliance, I used to unscrew the plug, and then pass the flex up an internal tube and then attach it to the blue and brown connections in the wall. The power is then controlled by a standard outlet switch. Just the same as an oven or a hob, but without the separate higher fuse levels, it's just a glorified plug socket, where instead of wiring the plug to three pins, it's wired directly to the source. I'm no electrician and I can manage it effortlessly.
Does that make any sense?it just seems ludicrous that the warranty would be negated by removing the plug!
  • Isolate the power to the existing hard wired outlet.
    Disconnect the old dishwasher.
Take the hard wired outlet off and replace it with a socket.

You'll still be able to isolate it using the switch on the wall.
You'll be able to plug in your dishwasher and you won't affect the warranty.

If you were to cut the plug off and then wire it to a new plug, or to a fused outlet, incorrectly (not saying that you personally would do this, just hypothetical) then the result is a destroyed dishwasher.
Should the warranty cover this sort of thing?

Clearly. I'd really love to know what an actual electrician would say about your current set up.

Traditionally the above worktop switch controls a below worktop spur or unswitched socket but I don't see anything wrong with Falcone's method as long as there is adequate strain relief for the connections..

Don't believe the OP said they actually installed the wiring set-up as it is - it appears they're just having to put up with it?

To fit both our washing machine and the dish washer i had to remove the plugs to get the wires through a predrilled hole in the units and then fit new plugs, didnt know i would be affecting any warranty. Surely if a fault arose it would be up to the retailer/manufacturer to prove it was caused by your wiring. What if the washing machine door fell off after 6 weeks? how would the explain that?

Don't muddle up the warranty and your statutory rights under the sale of goods act.

The warranty is over and above your statutory rights. As such they can impose specific terms on it.

And saying the removal of the plug would void a warranty would be an unfair term in my opinion...

Maybe they want the dishwasher to have it's own fuse that comes with the plug.
The manufacturer should not be held responsible for the house household wiring. The plug will give some added protection to the machine and user.
