The encryption algorithms they use seem to be pretty good.0

This program gets very good write ups on quite a few sites. In fact it's difficult to find any bad postings about it. Looks like a good freebie! How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

If you are after a package that will encrypt bigger volumes than 25mb then have a look at https://www.drivecrypt.com. It’s the commercial successor to the freeware scramdisk that I have used previously. It does cost though, unfortunately.
I believe you can encrypt the whole drive, OS and boot sector included as well as creating encrypted volumes. I think it also lets you embed encrypted volumes within media files so they cannot be easily found.
If you are after a freeware program to encrypt all your different passwords and usernames, check out http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net. Originally written by the guy that wrote the blowfish cipher. A very handy little tool.
If you want to send encrypted emails, PGP is probably the way to go.0 -
As with all security you have to balance the disadvantages of the measures you take against the threat and the consequences of being exposed to that threat.
The significant advantages of this app are that it is free and that it uses Bruce Schneier's Blowfish encryption algorithm, which IIRC to date hasn't been broken.
The disadvantage is that any encryption comes with a performance overhead on your machine.
I don't use file encryption at home, apart from for my passwords, because the threat of an unauthorised user gaining access is negligible. Coupled with this is the fact that I don't really have any sensitive data, so allowing a thief to access my data if my pc were nicked would be the least of my worries. I'd be more upset at losing my several thousand pounds of hardware than my data.
So in my situation I'd rather keep the performance.
Notwithstanding the above, apps such as this are useful if you do store sensitive personal/financial data that would leave you open to embarassment if unauthorised access were gained. This is particularly germane for laptop users on-the-go, where the risk of theft is much greater.
Worth bearing in mind though, that if you are using encryption only encrypt data files, and only those that you really feel it's necessary to protect.
