Connecting to gas main?
We currently have oil heating but want to change to a gas combi boiler for next winter. There is gas on our street so connection shouldn't be a problem I m told. My question is do I have to arrange this via British gas or are there others who can quote? Also anything else I should be aware of, tips etc?
Many thanks!

There are also several independant gas transporters. Their installation may be cheaper, but be aware that some suppliers charge a premium for being supplied via an IGT (although this is now reducing substantially)0 -

There are advantages to not being connected to gas. If you google RHI or RHPP, you'll find many incentives for heating systems which are only available to those not on gas.0 -
https://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/connections but they may not be the gas network in your areaI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

You need to contact who ever looks after the pipes in your area. It may be National Grid, or Wales and West or someone else. It depends where you live.
Once you get a quote they will give a you a price which can vary greatly depending on how much work is needed.
Took just over 3 months from the time I got a quote before they turned up to dig the road up.0 -
Nothing to do with BG, they are just a retail supplier like any other. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

First you need to check which company owns the nearest gas main - visit:
http://www.energynetworks.org/info/faqs/gas-distribution-map.html
Google the company name, then I believe whoever it is has online forms you can fill in to apply for a connection. These will be processed and you might get a visit by a surveyor, followed by a quote.
If there is a gas main in your street then it shouldn't be to complicated, it really depends how far away from your house the gas main is - also this is their busiest time of the year so may be 6-8 weeks before any work can be carried out (watch for Christmas holidays too). If you need it done urgently then look into it ASAP!!
Good luck - send me a message if you need any more help.0 -

And these heating systems are in general at best a breakeven with gas, as installed in real situations, while being considerably more expensive, and with servicing being lots harder and more expensive if they go wrong.0
