looking for area advice - Darnley, Glasgow

This may be a long shot, but I've seen a few people referring to the Glasgow area on this forum.
I've recently been to a Persimmon estate in the Darnley area of Glasgow. I stay about half an hour away currently and am aware that historically the area has a bad reputation, but I believe this is getting better over recent years.
The development itself looked nice and quiet, but it was hard to get a feel driving about nearby areas. Some looked a bit rough, but may well not be.
Any advice from locals would be appreciated. We would mostly be driving places but would be walking to local train stations to work. Also have a young son so need to consider local schools.
