  • Are you making your own mincemeat? I really wanted to make my own pastry and mincemeat this year but the ingredients needed for the mince meat add up to so much that it doesn't seem worth it unless you are making dozens and dozens so can buy in bulk. Not even just the alcohol as you only need a bit but just all the different types of fruit/peel/nuts etc.

Hey, just wanted to say instead of buying fruit, peel and nuts I just make mine with two 500g packs of value mixed fruit (from Mr T, A or M, they're all the same), costs around 88p per bag so way cheaper and is a mix of fruit and candied peel. I skip the nuts as prefer it without and just use whatever alcohol I have in already. Basically just use this recipe from the lovely Frugal Queen except I use vegetarian suet:

    Hope this helps :)

  • Hi,
I agree with Bluegreen, just use Tesco Value mixed dried fruit and dried shredded suet. The mince meat will keep well in an air tight tub for a few weeks. Save buying a kilner jar wrap the pastry in clingfilm & freeze (takes up lots less space than mince pies), just make sure you don't defrost it in the microwave, warm pastry will crack when it's rolled out, so defrost in the fridge, and use a marble rolling pin if you've got one.

Alternatively, make some now and eat them :)
If you don't like where you are - move. You are not a tree.
  • Does it still taste better than the pre made ones then? The thing is, I'm not the world's biggest raisin fan- like sultanas and dried berries so was hoping to try and alter the proportions a bit as the value fruit is pretty raisin dense...

You can leave out the raisins, I'm one that doesn't like currants. I've put all sorts in my mincemeat, made it back in January - as well as sultanas it's got pineapple, papaya, figs, ginger pieces, apple, cranberries, cherries and nuts, cider, ginger wine and brandy. The last batch I made lasted 3 Christmases, so I figured it was worth the extra cost - boy was it boozy, I had to warn any drivers before they had a mince pie :rotfl:

Did you just get all of that from a normal supermarket then? Cranberries, cherries, nuts were the sort of thing I was thinking of.

Sorry for posting on your thread craigywv but I thought it would save one of the board guides a tidy up job...!:)
  • I decided years ago not to make any mince pies until just before Christmas otherwise I would be so tempted to scoff them myself I adore swett mince meat and always buy up the luxury jars after Christmas in January when the supermarkets are off loading them My favourite is mincemeat tart with a lettice top to it selicious with custard or cream or ice cream .I have no will power whatsoever when it comes to mincemeat :):)
