How do you get Apps for Kindle Fire??

I have been looking at the possibility of Kindle Fire for my sons christmas present but I keep seeing people say how you are 'locked in' to Amazon for the Apps. Is there any way I can see the Apps available for purchase/download before I buy one.
I think the Kindle Fire may be suitable for his needs but would have liked to view the Apps first to check

Just one more question - Does the lack of a camera on Kindle Fire restrict the apps you can download from Amazon. I know on my old Ipod some are not compatible due to this reason0
