iplayer no sound via HDMI

Wonder if anyone can help with this. When I connect the HDMI cable to my laptop Asus N55S, it takes the picture to the TV but not the sound, if I then disconnect the HDMI cable from the laptop there is no sound coming from the PC version, I have to refresh iPlayer to get the sound back. Tried two different HDMI cables and no different. Sure I have done this before and it worked OK??

Thanks

  • Try this:

    1- go to Sound option

2-click on TV showing on the sound option

3- in properties find high definition audio device, click on properties

4- in high definition audio device click on properties, click on change settings

    5- click on DRIVER option

6- click on ROLL BACK DRIVER if that doesn't work, try to update driver.

This may sound bizarre but ... shutdown the laptop, connect it via HDMI to the TV, start up the laptop ... hopefully it will find the HDMI connection and route the sound through that path. If this works then all should be OK going forward.

I had this same issue with my Dell laptop, and doing the above solved the problem.

In the bottom right hand corner of your screen there are various icons. One of them should be a sound symbol. Right click on this. This should lead to audio devices and then details of each audio device. If you right click on the relevant devices you should get through to the options required. I think the details of the menus are dependent on your sound card manufacturer.

  • In my experiance you'll have to change the default sound options

Control Panel > Sound > HDMI output (default option is Speakers)

if theres no option or it's greyed out chances are you don't have the drivers installed

Not if you extend the desktop to the TV (i.e. laptop screen is Main display, TV is extended desktop), or set the TV to duplicate the laptop screen. :)

After booting up, right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution. It should be straight-forward from there. :)

But have you tried my previous suggestion? If yes, did it resolve the no-sound-through-TV issue?
  • seconded to using control pannel.

As stated, open control pannel, select sound. it should auto pick up the HDMI connection, but wont auto select it as the sound OP device, it will still be on speakers. Highlight the HDMI, select "set as default" and apply.

Restart iplayer and you should be set.

That assumes that the laptop even SEES the TV as a sound player device. That was the fundamental problem I had ... I couldn't select it via Control Panel because it wasn't there. Rebooting with the TV connected made it appear as a sound device and start working as expected. :)

The other thing which happens, is when I first connect the HDMI, the laptop screen goes to wallpaper as it does, then flickers and shows on both screens?? DG
