Cutting a Slot in an Unslotted Basin Waste

Hi All,
I bought an unslotted basin waste thinking it was the correct type for the basin I bought, but it wasn't so now the overflow of the basin (built into the ceramic) has nowhere to drain to.
I notice that there are many types of slotted basin waste, the most common being a biggish slot just below the plughole and some just being a few holes. The waste was £20 and the website I got it from (Pioneer Bathrooms/Heat and Plumb) are ignoring my numerous messages about swapping it, so I don't want to buy a second waste.
I think it is the usual tap material of chrome plated brass. Would it be OK if I drill and cut a slot in it using drills and a hacksaw? Would the exposed brass without the chrome corrode? I suggested this to my builder and he didn't like the idea and said it may cause leaks - is he right?
Any help would be appreciated!

You'll spend £ 20 in real terms on your labour faffing with it. If by ignoring you mean not replying to emails and/or not responding to messages left via their webby you are wasting your time. If you want/expect action from them you need to write using pen and paper. Or do you mean they are giving you a different answer to the one you want to hear? Its hardly their fault you bought the wrong thing. They are unlikely to swap it out if its been used anyway. Put it down to experience and buy a proper one would be my suggestion.

I've not used it but my bathroom is being fitted very soon and I've not got time to go through the rigmarole of writing to them. I made a number of enquiries with their web service regarding delivery times and other things and got rapid and helpful replies, but they just ignored the messages about returning it, which I'm unimpressed by. They even replied to a message that had two separate issues in it and just ignored the part about returning the item - it seems they just make it difficult for customers to return stuff because there's nothing in it for them and they don't care about customer service.
Mistakes are made and they should be willing to assist - the details on some of the products is minimal and it can be confusing for non-professionals. I'd be happy to send it to them at my own cost.0 -
As for my time - I doubt it'd take more than 20 minutes to cut a slot. Just drill 2 big holes and cut between them with a hacksaw.0

Hi
Did you make them aware of your intention of returning it within 7 days of receiving it? If you did, then under Distant Selling Regulation Act (or whatever it is called) you are eligible to return it.
If it is more than 7 days, then either buy another one or cut it yourself, as other stated.
Brass should not corrode without the chrome. Chrome is usually for aesthetics.
All the bestBe nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
just get your installer to bring a basin waste with him as KS said alot less hassle & you know the slot is in the right placeI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0
