Advice on Switching Gas/Electricity Supplier

Hi

I'm currently with Powergen and am intending to check the amount I'd save if I switched suppliers (I switched last about 2 years ago).

Problems I have are:

We have had a mild winter and therefore use of gas/electricity will be less than what it would be in a hard winter.

Although the price of gas rose last summer, my monthly DD wasn't altered for some time and I did have a debit on my account and my monthly DD payments were increased as a result (this has now been cleared).

I currently take meter readings on the same date each month so I'm aware of what my usage is each month. If I enter these details on a switching site, then does it work out what I am charged per unit plus any standing charge on my current tariff, and then what I would be charged by any given supplier based on my usage.

However, as my usage is much lower because of the mild winter will this distort the figures and could it result in me paying more for an average amount of units I would use during a harsher winter as the price of a particular supplier is cheaper unless you use more than x number of units.

I do hope this is understandable.

Thanks

You need the number of kwh you have used over the past 12 months for an accurate comparison, which you can work out from your bills. A mild winter shouldn't distort your electricity much unless you have electric heaters. As for gas, I wouldn't worry too much as there is nothing to say whether this winter will be even milder or the coldest in 50 years. However you could always play with the figure if you want, sticking some extra consumption onto the gas and seeing how it affects the results.
