Is it too late to plant bulbs : SE London

Hi,

Ordered a bunch of allium +other bulbs.

Would it still be ok to plant? It's not too cold yet where I am.

If not used will they store till next year?

  • Get 'em in! They may flower a bit late the first year but should be ok in later years - I plant bulbs any time of year, as I like to put them in when various beloved pets have been buried
Tulips are the main ones that should be planted late rather than early. If you were to store your alliums the chances are they wouldn't be in good condition when you came to plant them

I only bought my tulips yesterday

I've got tulips to replant just waiting for a break in the weather, apparently if you plant them before the end of November you run the risk of tulip fire.
  • Ah right, I've been meaning to get some bulbs in for the last three months! Today is the day then while there is some sun!

If you don't plant them this year, they will probably be useless for next year.

So get them in, they have two choices. ;)

I put in 100 tulips a fortnight ago and they've all been dug up by a bloody squirrel!
  • Thanks for the feedback.

As the OP I just wanted to feedback that I planeted about 200 bulbs last weekend. Alliums/tulips/anemone's/rununculi.

Will report back in the summer.

We have squirrels so am worried with glasgowdan's comments. If my bulbs get eaten, I will consider it a personal declaration of war. So far I have resisted the temptation to exterminate, but that will tip me over. I have some unused traps in my shed- will just need to invest in a air pistol for humane dispatching (they are all greys here).
  • If anyone has left it too late to plant cos the ground is now too hard to dig, pop them into light compost in big pots and drop the pot or just the plants into the ground in Spring
