Bank charges ARE fair

But the terms and conditions are one sided. But I'd have no right to take them to court in the first place as they set out their charges in the terms and conditions. If I don't want to pay those charges, I go to another bank that charge less. My concern is that MSE people are doing this to all banks and therefore it could see the end of free banking for those of us in credit.
Have they mentioned anywhere that if they make a human error they will pay me £30.
I had 2 cardcash acct with Halifax and transfered 1K in Account A instead of Account B I was always transfering on time and everything is fine.
But because I made a mistake once they put me total £86 fine.
It is over 4 weeks since I sent my 1st letter I havent even recd any acknowledgement. When I shown my unhappyness on this the customer relation (complaint) lady said by mistake we sent ack letter to your old address and it is a human error. (interestingly they don't treat my error as a human error)
Misd you I moved house almost 7 months ago (had Royalmail post forward for 6 month). So what will happen if it reaches to wrong person and he try to use in identity theft?
Ohh no I am still ot a human but their employees are.
Well their employee also might miss any payment what will happen then?
I don't respect any one sided treaty.
We all are forced to accept this. this is truth my friend0 -
I agree that charging a penalty is fair, but it is, like others ahve said the amount they charge. If accounts were managed by people and not computerised systems, the charges would not snowball. I know that if the bank was going to charge the actual cost (guestimating £1.25) then it would not be a deterrent but sending people into more debt is not the answer.
There has to be a happy medium, but until then I am happy to reclaim what the bank has charged me over the years until they can come to a decision with the OFT.
I'm sure even the anti-reclaimers wouldn't agree with this scenario:
Wages 3 days late going in
Overdrawn £5 - cahrged £30
so Overdrawn by £35
cheque bounces charged £30
direct debit x 3 returned charge £30 each + £25 each from companies
End of month charged "total charges" £150. So - charged £300 in total from bank and £75 from companies that I have dd's set up with

If you have an authorised overdraft and agree to the terms and conditons that is fair enough. If you have an unauthorised overdraft, you are borrowing someone elses money without permission. If you don't want to be charged, don't go overdrawn.
I don't really want to get into another debate about this but!
People aren't abusing the system! This isn't a get rich quick scheme or even an investment! Some people (not myself) get charged thousands of pounds through no fault of their own. To be charged like they have is sick. Me on the other hand, I was just crap with money. I have no excuse. But as much as people wish to ignore this, the banks have broken the T&C's aswell. Why should I be penalised and they get away with it? Oh thats right because you are worried about how it will affect you. No-one seems to care about the law! Quite selfish wouldn't you agree?

It's not fair but reclaim it from your employer as it's their fault.
Unfortunately the sad fact is that a large majority (not everyone, but a lot) just reclessly overspend and don't care.
Even when it is someone who is genuine, perhaps had their hours cut at work or washing machine broke, if they contacted their bank for help in the beginning maybe it wouldn't get to the stage of having hundreds or thousands of pounds of charges to reclaim!!0 -
This forum is for reclaiming queries, advice and support. So why are the "always in credit" people always posting in here and putting everybody else down ?0

but you are not charged £39 for them sending you a letter or en email - its for either paying or not paying a direct debit, card transaction, cheque, when the money is not there0 -
agree with u to some extend that some sort of penalty(disagree with amount though) should be imposed on those who exceed their limit frequently and dont bring record in order after 3-4 formal warnings. This forum is for reclaiming queries, advice and support. however person like who by mistake transfered money to different account once in 2 years should not be penalised with £86(plus some interest i earned on the account)0 -

not as simple as that Im afraid - I am self employed - this was my part time job as a musician - the wedding couple I sang for paid the agent by cheque - which bounced. The agent didnt receive another for a week which was over a bank holiday. Therefore I didn't get paid until after that had cleared - its a long process. I can't reclaim it from the wedding couple can I really.
Im sure genuine cases make up the majority of mistakesLBM 22nd February 2007 - Amount in debt £72,242.23:confused: one month on  £63,900;) 2nd month 60,000.09

The charges are too high...that is what the argument with the banks is all about.
I have a business bank account, as I am self employed...I get charged for it...writing cheques, paying in cash...you name it.
It doesnt bother me that i pay a small amount for writing a cheque etc...as this seems fair.
If you sorry people are going to cry because you will lose your free banking, thats tough...you may as well get used to the fact...its going to happen.
The good thing is, banks will then have to compete with each other, to 'tempt' customers like they do now...but will possibly use 'free banking' as one of those baits...so nothing much will change.
I would rather pay for normal bank transactions, than £35 x however much, when a customers cheque gets bounced on me, and my direct debit payments bounce thanks!0 -
